People are often defined by words spoken from their deathbeds. This was certainly the case in the life of Jesus. While those around him were unaware of his impending death, Jesus knew what was coming when his disciples gathered one Thursday night. While most of the Gospels give a brief glimpse into this interaction, John – Jesus’ best friend – remembered the night in vivid detail. The account John provides of that night – now famously known as the “Upper Room Discourse” – intimately reveals the heart of Jesus and the priorities of Jesus as his crucifixion approached. Jacob’s Well is a community that deeply desires to hear from God and to center our lives around his priorities. As such, there are few things more appropriate for us to study that Jesus’ words that night. May the parting words of Jesus continue to send His people forward into His mission.
