Community Meditation Questions

Growing in Knowledge

  • Some have argued that the word group “agaradzo” (to buy back) implies buying someone from an evil slave trader. They have suggested Jesus’ death was a ransom payment to the Devil. This view is alluded to, albeit in fictional form, in the CS Lewis novel The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Why is this an unsatisfactory view?
  • Discuss why the Exodus, not the pagan slave market, is the proper background for understanding the language of redemption in the NT.
  • Read Hebrews 9:11-15 together. Note the phrase “Offered himself without blemish to God.” Why did Jesus’ offering go to God and not Satan?

Feeling Life Deeply

  • Freedom is a massive theme in our culture. What do people mean when they say they want to be “free.” How is freedom in Christ different?
  • Do you feel free? What makes you feel “bound”?

Living with Courage

  • GK Chesteron once wrote “In the upper world hell once rebelled against heaven. But in this world heaven is rebelling against hell. For the orthodox there can always be a revolution; for a revolution is a restoration.” Do you view your life as a “revolution for redemption/restoration” and a “rebellion” against the powers of hell?
